Five Ways to Break the Afternoon Slump

Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest whole-body healing systems. Spring is the time of year of the Ayurvedic dosha kapha, which is the moist, heavy and sluggish energy governed by the earth and water elements. Kapha imbalances can show up any time, but tend to be more prevalent during spring. Excessive kapha leads to lethargy and sometimes depression, so you may be feeling a bit stuck or in a slump around this time of year. Read on for tips to break the afternoon slump.

We’ve all been there; 3:00 PM rolls around and we hit a wall – our productivity wanes, and our eyes feel heavy – we’re slipping into the afternoon slump. While the temptation may be to pour a cup of coffee or reach for something sweet, try one of these techniques to re-invigorate yourself.

  • Stretch – drop your ear to your shoulder with the opposite arm down by your side to stretch your neck. Repeat on the other side. Lift your arms straight overhead, capture your left wrist with your right hand and stretch up and over to the right. Return to center and repeat on the other side.

  • Move your body – Stand up and get the blood pumping with 10 jumping jacks or squats.

  • Be social – if you’re in an office environment, walk over to ask your coworker your question rather than sending it by email. If you work at home, walk around while making that phone call that you need to make.

  • Drink water – Be sure to hydrate! Fill up your water bottle or glass and drink up.

  • Get outside – Take a walk around the block in the fresh air.
