Change is in the Air

Fall is right around the corner. I can already feel a change in the air in the mornings - it's cooler and crisper. September has always been my favorite month for that reason. Growing up in NH, September meant the heat and humidity of summer was over. The sky seemed bluer, and the leaves would change to beautiful reds, oranges and yellows, making a spectacular sight. September is also my birthday month, so it's a common time for me to reflect on the previous year and

to contemplate the things I want to do in the year ahead. It seems to be a pattern of mine to make big life decisions in the Fall. I first decided to move from NH to Colorado all those years ago during Fall, and I'm about to make another big move. Provided there are no unexpected surprises, John and I will be closing on a new house in the mountains on October 1. It will be a big change for us moving from the suburbs where everything we could possibly need is within a few miles of us, to a house on a curvy, mountain road in Evergreen with 1.5 acres of property, but no lawn to mow, and our own well and septic. The house also has a wood fireplace and wood stove, which I'm super excited about having. Even change that we bring on ourselves, and that we want to happen can be scary and challenging. There's a poem in the book Pillow Thoughts by Courtney Peppernell that sums it up well:

"Change is not going to sit you down and ask if you are ready. Change is not going to knock on your door and hand you notice. Change is not going to hug you in the middle of the night and tell you it can wait. Change does not wait. Change doesn't care if you aren't ready. It will happen anyway. Change is not always the friend you may want, but it will always know when you need it." We all have a tendency to resist change, because it pushes us out of our comfort zone. In my experience, the best thing to do is to embrace change as it is inevitable. Nothing stays the same, and wouldn't life be somewhat boring if it did?
