Life is short...do what you love, love what you do

You may be familiar with the company Life is Good and their optimistic teeshirts. I've always loved their message - "do what you love, love what you do." This became even more poignant for me after surviving a heart attack at 31 years old. I realized that even though I had the teeshirt, I wasn't fully living the sentiment.

At the time, I didn't know what else to do, since I had been working in Human Resources (the field I studied in college) for 10 years. So, in the spirit of the "love what you do" part of the phrase, I looked for ways to find more joy in what I was already doing. I found a more flexible job, reporting to a manager who I knew and liked, working from home and in control of the hours that I put in. That was a start.

While seeking out things that interested me, I dipped my toe into new ventures during my free time by teaching yoga and coaching clients in wellness. As those lines of work grew, I was able to reduce my hours at my corporate job, and finally left HR completely.

My personal example resulted in taking the leap into entrepreneurship, but it might be different for you. Doing what you love might mean taking more time for things that you enjoy by cutting out things that drain your energy. Loving what you do might mean finding ways to appreciate the work that you have.

Last year, I hosted a 30-day digital declutter in the month of September. In the spirit of "do what you love, love what you do," let's declutter together again! An important part of the process is using the time that you are not looking at a screen to evaluate what's important to you. To consider - how do I want to spend my time?

Declutter is different from a digital detox - rather than cutting out all digital devices and content, decrease your use by deleting any unnecessary apps and content from your smart phone, and reducing social media and email. What you take away is up to you!

At the end of the digital declutter, you decide how much technology you allow back into your life. Start from the ground up and rethink how you communicate, and what will allow you to live your best life.

Join here to receive 10 tips for a successful declutter. The 30-day challenge starts on September 1!
